About The Book

Every holiday season in Niddlesville, there is a tradition that began as a respectful Christmas light contest, but has since become so much more — a full blown, nasty and bitter war some might say — but nonetheless an annual neighborhood rivalry filled with colorful lights, animatronics, and live entertainment that all signal a false impression of joy and happiness on Riddles Lane. And this competition attracts spectators from miles around, all to witness which family will win the most delicious (yuck!) prize in town, Mrs. Riddle's fruit cake. (And bragging rights, of course!)

For the last few years, the three main families in contention for the prize are the DeBenidetto's, the Volkov's, and the McNulty's. These three clans, each very distinct and different, will stop at virtually nothing to win. But this year, they've got some unexpected competition. Rabbi Rosenberg has been watching this lighting debacle happen each year with growing contempt, as his house is blasted with lights, Santas, and Christmas music, and he has decided that this year, he's going all out — not only enter the contest, but to win, and put Hanukkah on the map.

In the final days before judging, McNulty resorts to nasty tactics but Rosenberg fights back. Clearly, these two competitors are in the lead. But before the judges can award the fruitcake to one of them, Mr. Volkov has a surprise, which ultimately jeopardizes the entire neighborhood, and makes the judges think twice about who gets the most sought after fruit cake in town.
